Les besoins de la population
La rivière Rukarara est trop dangereuse pour être traversée en période d’inondations, qui se produisent pendant 6 mois dans l’année. Beaucoup d’habitants se blessent lors de leur tentative de traversée. Jusqu’à 6 personnes se tuent par année lors d’une tentative de traversée de la rivière. Lorsque la rivière est en crue, l’accès aux ressources critiques est interrompu. La population ne peut plus accéder au marché de Kumujeni, au dispensaire de Nyabimata ainsi qu’à plusieurs écoles.
Le pont suspendu de Uwarukara offrira un accès sécurisé tout au long de l’année pour les membres des communautés à proximité, et contribuera à sortir de la pauvreté.
Population needs
The residents of the Gahunga and Jenda communities are primarily involved in small business, pottery, and farming primarily rice, cassava, beans and sorghum to provide for their families. Of the 7,000 community members who will be directly affected by the construction of a footbridge, there are 800 children.
The Rukarara River is too dangerous to cross due to flooding six months of the year, and when the river floods, access to critical resources is cut off. Residents are unable to access the market to trade and sell and students cannot access school. Access to the health clinic is also blocked by the flooded river.
Currently six people per year die trying to cross the river. The Uwarukara Suspension Bridge will provide safe, year-round access for the members of the communities in close vicinity, and will empower the communities out of poverty.
